Chicago’s finally blooming again — and May is packed with lowkey pop-ups, massive art shows, and outdoor moves that’ll remind you why we put up with the winters.
If you’re looking to vibe out this month without dropping a ton of cash, here’s your hit list:
ART on THE MART
Location: Chicago Riverwalk (between Wells & Franklin)
Dates: Thursday–Saturday nights at 8:30 PM
The world’s largest permanent digital art installation lights up the Merchandise Mart building every spring — and it’s completely free. New shows drop throughout May, featuring vibrant projections by local and global artists.
Pro Tip: Pull up early for golden hour Riverwalk shots before the lights come on.
Augmented Chicago: Inaugural Realities
Location: Millennium Park
Dates: Ongoing throughout May
Augmented reality meets public art in this brand-new installation. Open the special app, scan markers around the park, and watch interactive artworks pop into your world. Perfect for art lovers, tech heads, or anyone who loves a good city flex on their Story.
Free Millennium Park Concerts
Location: Jay Pritzker Pavilion
Dates: Starting late May
One of the best free moves in the city returns: Chicago’s Millennium Park summer concerts. Expect everything from indie and R&B to jazz and global sounds — right under the skyline.
Grab a blanket, bring your own snacks, and catch a full concert for $0.
Spring Flower Show: “Rooted in Mystery”
Location: Garfield Park Conservatory
Dates: Now through May 11
One of Chicago’s most underrated gems, the Garfield Park Conservatory’s spring exhibit is straight-up magic. Wander through lush gardens, hidden floral installations, and moody, jungle-inspired spaces — all themed around the hidden life of plants.
Admission: Free, but donations encouraged.
Maxwell Street Market
Location: Desplaines & Roosevelt
Date: May 18
Part street fair, part cultural deep dive — the Maxwell Street Market is a whole vibe. Shop vintage finds, eat incredible street food (yes, you’ll smell the tamales from a block away), and catch live music while you wander.
Bonus Free Moves in May:
-
Stroll the Chicago Riverwalk after sunset
-
Post up at a hidden rooftop bar (so many lowkey spots open in May)
